Lessons From The Journey: Everything Worthwhile Is Uphill

Those early years were hard for me and our church. I worked non-stop, practically sleeping in my office. I quickly learned everything worthwhile is an uphill battle. The early years required hard work, incalculable grace from my wife, and loads of sweat equity. During this time I learned a valuable lesson – don’t quit because the work is hard, instead climb the hill and reap the rewards, it is all worth it!

When you think about hard work, what comes to mind? In Genesis 2:15, we read, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” God’s Word reminds us work is God’s gift to us, a part of His plan. Of course, when Adam and Eve sinned, life and work became more difficult.

Even so, God, through the Apostle Paul, encourages us in Colossians 3:23-24, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” Our work, however challenging or difficult, should be done in light of the fact that God is our boss.

In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul adds, “whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” When the work is hard and the uphill climb is most challenging, we must remember we are ultimately working for the Lord and our hard work brings glory to Him.

As we join together and work for the future, we must remember the past, especially how God enabled us through the journey, in spite of the challenges. But most importantly, we must remember His promise in John 16:33, ““I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Don’t quit! Keep pressing forward! What’s at the top of the hill is worth it!
