The Power of Words – Is Your Tongue Selling You Out?

Is your tongue selling you out? What a loaded question! Earlier in our “year to a better you,” we touched on the power of words and this week we dig into the truth about our oh-so-powerful tongues. Proverbs 18:21 tells us, “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” The words we speak are indeed a spiritual gauge, demonstrating how truly surrendered we are to God. 

Minds continually renewed by the Word will be reflected in our speech. Our words will betray us if our minds remain engulfed in old habits and beliefs. When we aren’t fully surrendered to God, our tongues will be the first to sell us out. In Luke 6:45, Jesus says, “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” Jesus is telling us plainly that a life surrendered to Him and filled with the Holy Spirit produces good speech – full of grace, mercy, and love. 

We know God spoke the universe into being with His Words. We also know His Word – the Bible – is how He communicates with us, revealing Himself. But it gets better. In John 1:1, we read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” and we discover Jesus is the living, breathing Word of God. Words and language were His ideas. His Words are life to us so it shouldn’t be surprising that our words have power through Him! 

Once we are saved we aren’t ushered into heaven but remain here on earth to reach others for Him and make a difference in the world. This week, may we renew our minds daily in the Word, so our tongues can’t sell us out – but more importantly so we can use our words to promote God’s kingdom as we minister to others. Let us also be reminded we are made in God’s image, and as His children we are meant to speak life, build others up, bring healing, and offer encouragement to those who need to hear His life-changing message!
